Best approaches to combat society impacts of the Danube sturgeon fishery ban through tourism

The main objective of this project is to bring together experts from different countries and academic disciplines with the aim of creating community-based adventure tourism in the Danube Delta using the charismatic beluga sturgeon as a flagship species to provide the local community with sustainable alternatives to sturgeon fishing.
Sub goals are:
- to investigate the impacts of the present sturgeon fishery ban on local communities along the Danube
- to research and promote nature tourism as a sustainable alternative income to sturgeon fishing
- to enhance knowledge and understanding of the biology and behaviour of beluga sturgeon to maximise the tourism potential of this species
- to build competence and improve practice of environmental tourism in the Tulcea region at the Lower Danube
- to provide a model for the development of sustainable, nature tourism in Romania.
